Captions for things that have none

Many videos, live streams, online classes and meetings have no captions, or poor ones. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, that can lock you out. A live transcript of whatever plays in a browser tab gives you text without asking anyone for permission.

How it works

  1. Open the video, stream or meeting in Chrome, Edge, Arc or Brave on a computer.
  2. Open Pendict in another tab, pick the language and start.
  3. Choose the tab with the audio and tick Share tab audio.
  4. Read the live text next to the video. Put the two tabs in side-by-side windows for the best view.

For face-to-face conversation

On a phone or tablet, use Dictate. It listens through the microphone and writes what it hears, so you can place the phone between you and the speaker and read the conversation.

What to expect

  • Text usually appears a few seconds after the words are spoken.
  • Clear speech and one speaker at a time give the best accuracy. Overlapping voices and heavy background noise reduce it.
  • Pendict is a helpful aid, not a replacement for a professional captioner or interpreter when accuracy is critical, such as medical or legal situations.
